Multisensory Stimulation & Babygym

Multi-sensory Stimulation is a relatively new intervention which is closely related to the ideas behind sensory stimulation therapy. The concept originated in the Netherlands in the 1960s, in the field of learning disabilities, and was first described in the UK by Hulsegge & Verheul (1987).

Early work in this field called this intervention ‘snoezelen’, which is a Dutch word derived from an amalgamation of the verbs meaning ‘to explore’ and ‘to relax’. The term ‘snoezelen’ remains in common use, although the word has now been registered as a trademark by a company.
